While we are in the throes of the holiday season, it’s easy to get caught up in the chaos. Myself included — which is why I am writing this today (welcome to my therapy!). I get so overwhelmed by everything that I end up doing nothing and procrastinating — and then I’m completely nuts trying to catch up.
A friend of mine told me she really has gotten into setting her intentions for each day. Goals, to do list . . . whatever you call it — I like the word intention better though. Somehow, it feels more official. I think the list needs to be small though or you get back into the procrastination problem again. At least for me, the longer the list, the less I do. Regardless, setting an intention each day has really been working for me. It doesn’t have to be just things like getting the grocery shopping done, or other errands. It can be something like, “I intend to be more patient today”, or “I will get to the gym today”, or “I will leave the house 10 minutes earlier today so I’m not rushing around like a total spaz” . . . you get the point. And, I think if you pray to someone or something, you should add your intentions to your prayers. And then, you have to act. Follow through on your intentions — probably the hardest part.
The power of your intentions/ your thoughts is everything. I went out last weekend — 3 holiday parties in row. I knew that I would have to control my alcohol consumption — not just so I wouldn’t embarrass myself but also because I wanted to be safe driving from one place to the next. Now, obviously, the threat of a car accident or a DUI is a lot of motivation, but I could have very well taken a taxi. I just wanted to be more “present” at these parties and actually be able to hold a meaningful conversation and also just wanted to take better care of myself. Nothing sucks more than a hangover. I am pleased to say, that I had 1 cocktail at each party — and it was perfect. I felt alert and had a great time. I was so proud of myself!
I brought this up in a post a while back about pushing yourself. What you think has more power than you realize. If you think “I have so much to do, and I’m never going to get it done” — then you won’t. But, I know that if you think “I have so much to do, and I am going to tackle it one thing at a time” — then you will. If you think “I am so intimidated by this person” then you will be, instead try thinking “this person is so inspiring”. It really often is how you word things in your head — it’s a sort of rewiring of your brain. Try it. You’ll be amazed by the power of your thoughts, your intentions.
