Have a fun weekend!

Hi my friends, what are you doing this weekend? We are headed back up to Red Rocks again for another killer workout. If you are in town, you should come join us! Details will be on the Hot Mamas Facebook page or on my website.

I completely forgot to tell you that I am going on vacation! We had been debating for a couple months about where to go, but in the end, we decided on Miami again. We both just love the heat and the culture. I’ll be posting intermittently, so stay tuned!

In the meantime, here are some fun things I found on the web this week:

Knuckle Tattoos (as seen above) look fun and ghettolicious

Stylemint— Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen’s new brain-child. Fabulous, and I’ve already ordered my first tee!

Cool tees/dresses from Surf Bazaar in Montauk

Even in this heat, I’m loving these boots!

I’m making these tonight — Delicious with a skinny margarita!

Nowness — great photography

New joint from Robin Thicke — love his new sound.

Love these high-tops from Nike!

Winning! Never interested in 2 and half men until now . . . .

I have my eyes on you:

My first fall purchase — Aha!

Beautiful video. My favorite place on earth. Can’t wait to go in the fall!

Monday is here already move of the week

Hi Mamas, how was your weekend? Mine was spent celebrating my sons 13th birthday. Yikes! I now have a teen in my house. And though, he’s been changing a lot over this past year, it’s like he instantly turned into a new person overnight. And, you may be asking — is this good or bad? Well, I’ll let you know.

Today’s move is one of my all-time favorites. The side lunge . . . can be hard on the knee, so make sure you are stacking your knee over your ankle. Keep the other leg nice and long and really work that stretch. And, with that overhead reach, make sure you keep your shoulder blade down and the neck long. 3 sets of 15 each side.

Enjoy your Monday!

Dinner Tonight

Are you SO sick of making dinner these days? I finally got excited when I went to the store and saw that asparagus is back in season (so are artichokes — my absolute favorite). Not that we haven’t seen asparagus in the store all year, but it’s really in season right now. So I plan to incorporate as much asparagus into my life as my family will allow. Is there such thing as an asparagus cocktail?

This recipe is super simple and one that I use all of the time. It’s great when you don’t want to spend a lot of time in the kitchen, but want to make something healthy that your family will actually eat. Choose a flank or a flap steak and cut thin strips on the bias. I’m using red peppers and asparagus — but feel free to be creative and put in lots of different kinds of vegetables. The key is to not over cook.

Flank Steak Stirfry with Asparagus and Red Pepper

* 3 Tbsp vegetable oil
* 1/2 lb asparagus, trimmed, cut into 1 1/2 inch lengths (about 1 1/2 cups)
* 1 lb of flank steak, sliced in half lengthwise (along the grain) and then cut into thin strips, 2 inches long and 1/4 inch wide (put the steak in the freezer for 15 minutes before slicing to make it easier to slice)
* 1 red bell pepper, seeded, de-ribbed, and cut into thin strips 2 inches long and 1/4 inch wide
* 2 teaspoons of cornstarch dissolved into 3 Tablespoons of water (if you have a little jar with a lid, put this combo into the jar and shake really hard)

All Purpose Stir Fry Sauce

* 3 Tbsp soy sauce (use gluten-free soy sauce for gluten-free version)
* 1 tsp finely chopped, peeled, fresh ginger
* 1 small clove garlic, minced
* 1 green onion, including green tops, chopped
* 1/2 tsp chili oil

Feel free to add more ginger or chili oil to taste — I also add red pepper flakes

* parboil asparagus pieces for about 2 minutes — then rinse in cold water and set aside
* make your rice — I always use an electric rice cooker. Saves time and the rice is always perfect.
* stir-fry asparagus for about 2 minutes until browned — then set aside
* stir-fry beef until browned — but still a little pink on the inside (about 2-3 minutes) Don’t overdo it!
* add red pepper and toss around with beef for about 2 more minutes
* toss in cornstarch mixture and stir fry sauce: stir and let thicken. Add asparagus and toss to coat.
* Serve immediately with brown rice.

Is there a pill for that?

Love this commercial. I’d like to think you could see a Hot Mamas logo on that gym bag . . .

I hope you are having a good week. I’ve had one of those interesting ground hog day sort of weeks. You know, every day is the same with the same family drama and you feel like if you don’t have a bottle of wine with dinner that you might go off the deep end? I guess that sounds a little dramatic. but you know what I mean. I had a student today who came to class, brought her kids upstairs to the childcare and then after class she’s going to another health club in town (that she belongs to) and putting her kids in the childcare there for another 2 hours so she can go sit on a bike and watch tv, hit the sauna, etc. Sound crazy? I don’t think so. Sometimes you have to do whatever is necessary to keep you sane. I think sometimes being a little selfish is the only way to survive. Her kids won’t know the difference — they’ve been playing. And, obviously, quality time with mom isn’t happening anyway.

I had a great conversation with a friend yesterday and we were talking about people who medicate for everything — because we all know there’s a pill for everything these days. So when is medicating too much? Is there a pill for life? I’m not going to get all Tom Cruise on you, but, isn’t there a point where you do really have to figure out how to cope on your own? I think a very important part of surviving as a modern woman is finding time for yourself and finding things that you do that you can own. Whether it’s getting a part time job or volunteering — doing something that makes you feel like you are productive and valuable is very important for the mind. We all know that being a mom is the most important job — but let’s face it, it’s not always rewarding. It’s a lot of work with very little recognition. With that in mind, you have to find things apart from being a mom that feed your self esteem. In addition to that, you must take care of your body — you have to eat well and exercise. You just have to. When you aren’t feeling well and feeling good about yourself, then you aren’t really good in any other area of your life. And you feel like you are always just surviving. I don’t think that’s what life is supposed to be like.

So, your assignment. Is #1 finding something that you enjoy that you do on your own (or with friends) that makes you happy. Horseback riding, painting, tennis, guitar, jewelry, design; something that you can escape to when you are having one of those crazy days. #2, find something to do that helps others because when you help others, you forget about yourself. It doesn’t have to be something that has a huge time commitment. And, you’re children will follow by your example. #3, start taking better care of yourself. Stop putting yourself last. Eat better and make it a habit. As Charlie Sheen says “Nike doesn’t say just try it, Nike says JUST DO IT!”

Music Wednesday

Here’s a new song from J Lo. Not really sure about all her identities in this video. I like the one in the middle of dance-floor. Although she’s a dancer, we don’t get to really see any moves — just a lot of hair and sultry pouting. I like the song though. Looks like all that running has paid off, she looks pretty good from what I can see.

Have a great day.
