I just read an article about a woman who left her 9-year-old at Bloomingdale’s with $20, a metrocard & some quarters in order to let him find his way home (at his request). Wow. She has some serious stones. She’s gotten lots of criticism — but hey, she made it onto the Today Show among other news programs for her unorthodox mothering.
I have to say, I’m feeling a little proud of this mom. I’m sure many of you would think this woman is completely crazy and put her son in danger. But, I think that your children should know the lay of the land where they live. Hey, her son is a New Yorker. What if they got separated? I think it’s smart — especially for a city kid — to know how to get home. I know I do this for my kids here in our little cow-town of Denver (and I’m always terrified my kids are going to be abducted). But aren’t we doing our kids a huge disservice by protecting them so much that they don’t even know how to get home?
I applaud this woman for her brave mothering.
